Nomad Rugged Folio for iPhone Xs | 11 Review

Right from picking up the box, the Nomad Rugged Tri-Folio just oozes luxury; unpacking the integrated-wallet case feels not dissimilar to opening a new iPhone. Behind the gorgeous packaging lies a tri-fold folio-style case, made from a polycarbonate body with a TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) bumper, wrapped in stunning brown Horween leather lined with microfiber. Horween leather is made using traditional tanning techniques dating back to 1905. Unlike a lot of modern leathers that use extensive synthetics and spray sealants, Horween leather is vegetable tanned, imbued with natural waxes and oils, and left unsealed, meaning it develops its own distinct patina and character with use over time. This also means that it WILL scratch and mark, so if you aren’t into leather that “ages gracefully” or prefer a mark-free finish, this case isn’t for you.

Inside, there are 4 extra-deep credit card slots and 2 cash slots. The credit card slots can take up to 2 cards each and if you really have that many cards the cash slots can also double up. The trouble with doing this, however, and a problem faced with many wallet cases, is the inevitable resulting “bulge”. The case doesn’t have a latch or magnet clasp to keep the folio closed, and when you push it to capacity it just doesn’t stay shut unless you physically hold it so. Nomad have built in an extra wide “hinge” on the folds to try and counter this, but it just doesn’t do the job. This is a real design flaw in an otherwise stunning case.

In terms of protection, the “Rugged” part of the Tri-Folio name may be just a little ambitious. It hasn’t been through any MIL-STD-810g tests; however, it does offer up to 6ft drop-protection. We’re just not so sure how it’s going to cope with water (being unsealed leather) and the bumper is very small too, so a face first splat may still produce scratches if dropped on a rough surface.

All in all, if you don’t want to carry a bazillion cards, and you’re looking for a truly beautiful, luxury wallet-case without the need for “tradesman-level” protection, then the Nomad Rugged Tri-Folio is for you.
